Young Harris advances to GSC title game with 21-3 win over Shorter

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | Hayley Bartlett scored five goals and assisted on seven others as Young Harris College defeated Shorter University 21-3 in the semifinals of the Gulf South Conference Women's Lacrosse Tournament Friday (April 26) afternoon at the YHC Soccer and Lacrosse Field.

The top-seeded Mountain Lions, who improved to 11-6, will now face No. 2 seed University of Alabama in Huntsville, which defeated the University of Montevallo 21-4 in the other semifinal, in Sunday's (April 28) 1 p.m. championship game. YHC and UAH shared the GSC regular-season title this year and will meet for the fourth consecutive year in the tournament championship match. Shorter ended their season at 5-11.

Young Harris scored the first four goals of the match and 10 of the first 11 as they jumped out to a 10-1 lead on a Mary Deatrick goal with 12:44 left in the first half.  Maddie Peek scored four goals during the scoring spree, while Bartlett found the back of the net twice.

After a Shorter goal, the Mountain Lions reeled off eight unanswered goals to open up an 18-2 lead on a Deatrick strike off a Bartlett assist with 16:03 remaining in the game.

Young Harris held a 33-16 margin in shots, 17-13 edge in ground balls and 15-11 in draw controls.

The seven assists from Bartlett set a new single-game tournament record and her five goals are tied for the second most in a tournament game.

Peek added four goals for the Mountain Lions, while Taylor Greenberg and Deatrick each scored three times. Leigh Anne Turner and Erika Cross added two goals apiece, while Anna Luckie and Ansley Coles found the back of the net once. Greenberg and Cross added two assists, while Luckie and Channing Milford each distributed an assist. Deatrick collected seven draw controls with Greenberg had three. Kelsey Dover scooped up four ground balls, while Milford had three. Rachel Robb turned away 10 shots in goal for the Mountain Lions.
