YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | Tournament Most Valuable Player Sophia Fiorino along with Katie Gerber each scored four goals as the University of Alabama in Huntsville held on for a 15-11 victory over Young Harris College in the title game of the Gulf South Conference Women's Lacrosse Tournament Sunday (April 28) afternoon at the YHC Soccer and Lacrosse Field.
The Chargers earned their first GSC Tournament championship as they improved to 16-3, while Young Harris saw its string of three consecutive GSC Tournament titles snapped as they fell to 11-7. UAH and the Mountain Lions were meeting in the title game for the fourth consecutive year.
UAH, which never trailed in the game, scored four unanswered goals, including two from Fiorino, that saw the Chargers open up a 6-2 lead with 14:31 left in the first half. YHC responded by scoring four of the next five goals to get within a goal at 7-6 after
Leigh Anne Turner scored with 5:16 left.
Young Harris opened the second half by scoring three of the first four goals as All-Tournament performer
Erika Cross tied the match at 9 with 19:38 remaining in the game. However, the Chargers scored back-to-back goals in 10 seconds as UAH regained an 11-9 lead with 18:23 to go. The Mountain Lions got goals from
Mary Deatrick and Cross to pull within a goal at 12-11 with 14:23 to go; however, they wouldn't score the rest of the match. The Chargers added three insurance goals in the final 10 minutes to clinch the win.
UAH held a 30-27 edge in shots and 18-12 in ground balls, while the Mountain Lions led 15-13 in draw controls.
Cross led the Mountain Lions with four goals and two assists. Deatrick,
Taylor Greenberg, and
Channing Milford each found the back of the net twice, while Turner added another one. Bartlett added two assists. Cross led YHC with four draw controls, while
Anna Luckie and Milford had three each. All-Tournament performer
Kelsey Dover led the Mountain Lions with four ground balls and caused four turnovers. Greenberg scooped up three ground balls, while
Maddie Peek had two.
Rachel Robb recorded eight saves in goal for the Mountain Lions, while
Eryn Brown was also named to the all-tournament for YHC.
