Montevallo edges Young Harris 15-14 in overtime

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | Jackson Neufeld's goal 36 seconds into overtime gave the University of Montevallo a 15-14 Great Lakes Valley Colnference men's lacrosse victory over Young Harris College Saturday (April 13) afternoon at the YHC Soccer and Lacrosse Field.

The Falcons improved to 5-8 on the season, while the Mountain Lions fell to 6-6. Both teams are currently tied for fourth place in the GLVC at 2-3 with one match remaining in the regular season. The top four teams qualify for the GLVC Tournament later this month.

Young Harris had sent the match into extra time when Bevan Pate tied the game at 14 on an unassisted goal with 83 seconds remaining in regulation.

The game was a close one as neither team led by more than three goals during the match. Young Harris took an 11-9 lead as Beau Henson scored with 4:19 remaining in the third quarter; however, the Falcons scored the next four goals to take a 13-11 lead on a Thomas Vaesen goal with 13:25 left in the match. Young Harris equalized the match at 13 with 7:51 to play as Henson and Cody Bielec scored back-to-back goals. Vaesen put the Falcons back up three minutes later before Pate sent the game into OT.

Vaesen led Montevallo with five goals, while Neufeld added four.

Garrett Blake and Bielec led Young Harris with three goals apiece, while Sam Gasta, Henson and Jimmy Martelli had two each. Pate and Tyler Oglesby had one goal each for the Mountain Lions. Blake and Gasta has two assists apiece, while Bielec, Jimmy Johnston, Pate, Bruce Silk and Daniel Zimny each recorded one.

Eric Lemire recorded eight face-off victories while Parker Lamarque had three. Oglesby and Lemire led YHC with four ground balls each, while Mason King, Bobby Kidd III and Kyle Beverly had two each. King tallied 18 saves in goal for the Mountain Lions.
