YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | Young Harris College held Gannon University without a goal for nearly 45 minutes at the beginning of the game and at the end as the Mountain Lions recorded an 18-5 non-conference women's lacrosse victory Wednesday (March 6) afternoon at the YHC Soccer and Lacrosse Field.
The Mountain Lions improved to 3-2, while the Golden Knights fell to 1-1. Young Harris closes out the homestand with a 7 p.m. non-conference tilt against Lenoir-Rhyne University Friday (March 8).
Young Harris jumped out to a 6-0 lead as the Mountain Lion defense held Gannon scoreless for the opening 20:12 of the match.
Anna Luckie scored three times during the run, while
Taylor Greenberg scored twice and
Mary Deatrick found the back of the net once. The Golden Knights scored three of the final goals in the opening half as the Mountain Lions took an 8-3 lead at intermission.
Gannon opened the second half by scoring two of the first three goals to pull within four goals at 9-5; however, the Young Harris defense stiffened and didn't allow the Golden Knights to score a goal the final 24:20 of the match as Young Harris scored the final nine goals. Young Harris limited Gannon to just eight shots in the second half.
Rachel Robb stopped 14 of the 23 shots she faced in goal for the Mountain Lions. Young Harris outshot the Golden Kings 33-23 and held a 15-10 advantage in draw controls and 27-20 edge in ground balls.
Luckie led the Mountain Lions with four goals, while
Leigh Anne Turner and Deatrick scored three apiece.
Erika Cross,
Hayley Bartlett and Greenberg has two goals each, while
Channing Milford and
Ansley Coles each added a goal. Bartlett and Cross led Young Harris with four assists each, while Luckie had two.
Maddie Peek and Turner also dished out an assist.
Deatrick and Milford had four draw controls for the Mountain Lions, while Peek and Millford each scooped up four ground balls and
Hannah Sacristan corralled three. Peek, Sacristan and
Kirsten Barth each caused two turnovers as the Mountain Lions forced 21 Gannon turnovers.
