FLORENCE, S.C. | Francis Marion University held off a furious Young Harris College rally to register a 4-3 Peach Belt Conference men's tennis victory Saturday (March 30) afternoon at the Kassab Courts.
The 26th-ranked Patriots improved to 9-6 overall and to 1-4 in the Peach Belt, while the Mountain Lions, who suffered their fourth 4-3 defeat this season, fell to 0-9 and 0-4. Young Harris will travel to Greenwood, South Carolina, for a 1 p.m. PBC match against No. 4 Lander University Sunday (March 31).
Francis Marion jumped out to a 3-0 lead, but
Javier Villar,
Ignacio Ascarrunz and
Romeo Luque all claimed wins in their respective singles matches to knot the score at 3. Villar won 6-2, 6-4 at No. 1, while Ascarrunz rallied to win match at No. 2 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (5). Luque tied the match with his three-set win (6-2, 4-6, 6-4) at No. 5. Francis Marion clinched the win when Henri Broeseler defeated
Herman Ronnberg 4-6, 6-4 and 7-5 at No. 6.
