YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | Hunter Foster hit a two-out solo home run in the top of the 10th inning to lead Georgia Southwestern State University to a 5-4 Peach Belt Conference baseball victory over Young Harris College Friday (March 29) evening at Zell B. Miller Field.
The Hurricanes improved to 12-21 overall and to 6-10 in the league, while the Mountain Lions fell to 20-11 and 8-6. The two teams will conclude the weekend series with a 1 p.m. doubleheader Saturday (March 30).
With the scored tied at 4 and two outs in the top of the 10th inning, Foster hit a 2-0 pitch from YHC reliever
Matt Rogers (1-1) that just cleared the center field fence for his fourth homer of the season.
Young Harris mounted a rally in the bottom of the inning as
Tyler Washington stroked a two-out double to right-center field and
Tristin Smith was intentionally walked to put runners at the corners, but Georgia Southwestern reliever Harrison Timberlake got his fourth save of the season as he got
Corley Reynolds to fly out to left field to end the game.
The Mountain Lions took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a
Dahlton Cash sacrifice fly before the Hurricanes converted a second inning error by YHC error into three runs (one earned). Young Harris got a run back in the third as
Tucker Greer led off with an infield single and scored on a
Zavier Lushington triple into the right fielder corner.
Georgia Southwestern increased its lead to 4-2 in the fifth on a two-out single by Foster, who had three hits for the Hurricanes. Young Harris tied the game at 4 in the bottom of the seventh Reynolds started the rally with an infield single and moved to third on Greer's double to center. Lushington drove in the first round on a ground out and Cash followed with an RBI single to right-center.
Tucker led the way for the Mountain Lions with three hits, while Lushington, who added a double in the ninth inning, Cash and Washington each collected two hits.
A.J. Hayes (1-1) earned the win with 2.1 innings of scoreless relief. YHC starter
Cameron Williams struck out seven in six innings of work, while Rogers tallied five in four innings.
