ST. LOUIS, Mo. | March Madness isn't just for basketball.
The Young Harris College men's lacrosse team served up their own version of March madness Friday (March 22) as they upset No. 17 Maryville (Mo.) University in overtime of a Great Lakes Conference Valley match at Maryville Field.
Cody Bielec scored at the buzzer in regulation for the Mountain Lions and
Garrett Blake registered the game-winner on the first possession in overtime as Young Harris snapped the Saints' seven-match winning streak. Young Harris improved to 5-4 overall and to 1-1 inside the league, while Maryville slipped to 8-2 and 2-1. The Mountain Lions wrap up their road trip with a 1 p.m. Central time match Sunday (March 24) against Rockhurst University in Kansas City, Missouri.
Maryville's Lucas Shafer scored with 3.5 seconds in regulation to put the Saints up 10-9. However, an unsportsmanship infraction against Maryville was called after the goal which allowed Young Harris to take possession of the ball without the ensuing face-off.
Daniel Zimny started the possession at midfield and found Bielec just outside of the crease. Bielec fired from four yards out into an open net as the Maryville goalie had come out to try and intercept Zimny's pass.
Young Harris won the opening face-off in overtime and
Bruce Silk found Blake for the game-winner with 3:03 remaining. It was the Mountain Lions' second ovetime win of the 2019 season.
Blake led the Mountain Lions with four goals, while Bielec added three more. Silk and
Jimmy Martelli each found the back of the net twice as Young Harris outshot Maryville 35-29. Zimny registered four assists, while
Bevan Pate and Silk had two apiece.
Parker Lamarque had six face-off wins, while
Eric Lemire added five more for the Mountain Lions. Lamarque led YHC with seven ground balls, while
Bobby Kidd III and Zimny each scooped up three. Lamarque and Kidd also each caused two turnovers.
Mason King had six saves in goal for the Mountain Lions.Â
