YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | Young Harris College swept a Peach Belt Conference baseball doubleheader from Francis Marion University Sunday (March 17) afternoon at Zell B. Miller Field.
The Mountain Lions struck for 14 runs in the shutout of the Patriots in the opener before taking game two 6-3. Young Harris improved to 17-8 overall and 6-4 in the PBC, while the Patriots fell to 17-9 and 9-6. The Mountain Lions host Lee University at 6 p.m. Wednesday (March 20).
Young Harris scored six runs in the bottom of the second inning in game one that started after a RBI fielder's choice from
Ethan Underwood.
Brett Hawkins, Dahtlon Cash, and
Tristin Smith each picked up RBI singles through the left side to make it a 4-0 game for the Mountain Lions.
Corley Reynolds drew a bases-loaded walk and
Cole Jackson scored on a wild pitch to conclude the six-run inning.
Young Harris scored five more runs in the third inning that ended with a double down the right field line from
Logan Worley. The Mountain Lions picked up one run in the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings.
Dylan Gibeau (3-2) picked up the win for Young Harris as he gave up two hits with nine walks and five strikeouts in six innings pitched.
Hawkins finished with four hits, a RBI, and two runs scored, while
Zavier Lushington had four hits, a RBI, and three runs scored. Smith collected one hit, two RBI, and a run scored. Cash had two hits, one RBI, and a run scored.
Cole Jackson went 1-for-1 at the plate with one RBI, a run scored, three walks, and a hit-by-pitch. Reynolds and
Dixon Craft each had one hit and a RBI, while Underwood had one RBI.
Weston Rogers (2-3) earned the loss for the Patriots as he gave up six unearned runs on six hits with four walks and two strikeouts in 1.2 innings pitched.
Francis Marion struck first in game two with a single through the left side by Leniel Gonzalez.
Reynolds tied the game at one in the bottom of the second inning with a single to right field that scored Cash. Worley gave YHC the lead (2-1) with a double to right field. Reynolds came around to score on a RBI groundout by Underwood to make it a 3-1 game in the second inning.
Jackson hit a RBI single up the middle in the third inning to extend the Mountain Lion lead to 4-1. Francis Marion picked up two runs in the fifth to make it a 4-3 game in favor of Young Harris.
Cash hit a RBI groundout to second that scored Hawkins to make it a 5-3 advantage for the Mountain Lions in the fifth inning. Worley concluded the scoring with a RBI fielder's choice to third that scored
T.J. Byrd in the eighth inning.
Dylan Nix (3-0) earned the win as he gave up one hit with five strikeouts in 2.1 innings pitched.
McLain Harris picked up his fifth save of the season as he gave up two hits with one strikeout in two innings pitched.
