ROME, Ga. | Shorter University took the opening game of the three-game weekend series against Young Harris College 8-3 Friday (Feb. 8) afternoon at Robert H. Ledbetter Field.
The Hawks improved to 4-1, while the Mountain Lions fell to 2-3. With the threat of rain Sunday (Feb. 10), the teams will now play a noon doubleheader Saturday (Feb. 9).
Young Harris jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first. A
Cole Jackson single sandwiched between walks to
Tucker Greer and
Dixon Craft to load the bases.
Joel Ellis drove in the first run after being hit by a pitch, while
Zavier Lushington followed with a bases-loaded walk.Â
Shorter got a run back in the bottom of the first before scoring twice in the fifth to tie the game at 3. The Hawks added two runs each in the sixth and seventh innings and added another run in the eighth to open up an 8-3 lead.
Jackson, who added a double in the eighth inning, Lushington and
T.J. Byrd led the Mountain Lions with two hits apiece.
Brett Hawkins also tallied a hit.
Dylan Gibeau (0-2) took the loss for the Mountain Lions, while Shorter's Victor Santana (1-0) struck out six in 6.1 innings of scoreless relief.
