ANDERSON, S.C. | Young Harris College scored three runs in the top of the 14th inning to register a 13-10 non-conference baseball victory over Anderson (S.C.) University Tuesday (Feb. 5) afternoon at Memorial Stadium.
The game, which lasted three minutes short of five hours, also matched the longest game in YHC's NCAA era - 14 innings (2017 vs. Armstrong State University). Young Harris improved to 2-2, while the Trojans fell to 3-1. Young Harris returns to action Friday (Feb. 8) when they travel to Rome, Georgia, for a 1 p.m. contest against Shorter University to open up a three-game weekend series.
With the game tied at 10, Brett Gracyzk led off the top of the 14th with a single up the middle off Anderson reliever Alex Medlin (0-1).
Logan Worley singled through the left side and
Tucker Greer reached on a bunt single to load the bases. Young Harris took an 11-10 lead on a
Cole Jackson sacrifice fly to right and added another run on a
Dixon Craft sacrifice fly ro right.
Joel Ellis closed out the scoring with an RBI single back up the middle.
McLain Harris (1-0) retired the side in order in the bottom half of the inning - striking out two - . Harris allowed just two hits and walked no one during his 4.2 innings of work. Harris, along with relievers
Brett Jackson,
Tucker Daniel, and
Jake Tomelevage, shut down the Trojan offense. They allowed just three hits and struck out nine over the final nine scoreless innings.
Young Harris, which banged out 24 hits - fifth most by the Mountain Lions in a game (NCAA era), forced the extra innings as they scored five runs in the eighth inning to tie the game at 10. Greer drove in the first run with a single before
Cole Jackson drew a bases-loaded walk and
Bailey Campbell was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to pull within two runs. The Mountain Lions completed the rally with
Zavier Lushington's two-run double to left field.
Lushington, Worley and Campbell led the Mountain Lion hit parade with four hits each. Lushington had a double and two triples and drove in three runs, while Campbell had two doubles and also drove in three runs. Greer added three hits and
Tristin Smith contributed two hits as 12 different YHC batters collected at least one hit. Worley and Greer each scored three runs, while
Cole Jackson and Graczyk added two runs each.
