Hutchinson, Woghiren lead Young Harris past Georgia College 59-57

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. |  Elle Hutchinson and Sarah Woghiren each scored 14 points as Young Harris College defeated Georgia College 59-57 in a Peach Belt Conference women's basketball game Wednesday (Feb. 27) evening at the Centennial Center.

The Mountain Lions improved to 6-21 overall and to 4-17 in the Peach Belt, while the Bobcats slipped to 10-17 and 8-13. Young Harris will wrap up its season Saturday (March 2) when they host the University of South Carolina-Aiken in a 1:30 p.m. PBC contest at the YHC Basketball Arena. After the contest, the Mountain Lions will recognize Pamela Diokpara  and Sarah Reid in Senior Day activities.

Georgia College scored the game's first nine points, but the Mountain Lions responded with a 16-5 run that saw Young Harris take a 16-14 lead on a steal and layup by Dee Dee McLane with 9:25 remaining in the second quarter. The Mountain Lions would take a 29-27 lead at the half.

Neither team would enjoy more than a four-point lead in the third quarter and into the fourth quarter. Young Harris used an 7-2 run to open up a 58-52 lead after Wogfhiren sank a three-pointer and a layup with 64 seconds left. Georgia College got a Kenyatta Storms layup and a Sydney Cleveland three-pointer to get within a point (58-57) with 11 seconds left. Avery Jordan hit the front end of two free throws to put the YHC lead to 59-57 with nine seconds to go. The Bobcats had a chance to tie the game but Christen Copeland missed a layup with a second left.

Jessica Beckner also scored 10 points and grabbed six rebounds for the Mountain Lions, while Diokpara and Jordan each grabbed eight rebounds.

Erin Drynan led Georgia College with 13 points and seven rebounds, while Cleveland added 12 points.
