Mountain Lions soar past Hawks 93-59

ROME, Ga. | Sarah Woghiren scored 17 points to lead a balanced scoring attack as the Young Harris College women's basketball team recorded a 93-59 non-conference victory over Shorter University Monday (Dec. 2) evening at the Winthrop-King Centre.

Thirteen of the 14 players that played for the Mountain Lions scored as Young Harris improved to 5-1. The 93 points for the Mountain Lions are tied for the second most in program history and was one off the record of 94 points. The four-game winning streak for YHC is the longest since a four-game winning streak during the 2015-16 season. The Hawks remained winless in five tries. Young Harris returns to action Saturday (Dec. 7) when they travel to Cleveland, Tennessee, for a 2 p.m. contest against Lee University.

The Mountain Lions led for all but the opening 19 seconds of the game as Young Harris shot 51.4 percent (36-of-70) from the field. The Mountain Lions scored 33 points off Shorter's 28 turnovers and outscored the Hawks 56-24 in the paint as YHC outrebounded Shorter 42-19.

Young Harris broke open the game in the middle quarters as the Mountain Lions outscored the Hawks 48-23 in the second and third periods. The Mountain Lions took their largest lead (37 points) - 91-54 after an Avery Jordan layup with 4:44 left in the game.

Woghiren was one of four Mountain Lions to finish in double figures. Samantha Russell and Jada Griffin each tossed in 11 points, while Kalen Surles posted a double double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Bria Clemmons tallied nine points, while Carly Winters added eight. Mackenzie Johnson also grabbed seven rebounds. 

Jasmine Gaines led Shorter with 25 points and nine rebounds.
