FRANKLIN SPRINGS, Ga. | Breanna Locke scored eight of her game-high 25 points in the fourth quarter as Emmanuel (Ga.) College rallied for a 65-62 non-conference women's basketball victory over Young Harris College Saturday (Nov. 9) evening.
The Lions improved to 1-1, while the Mountain Lions fell to 1-1. The two teams will meet in the YHC Basketball Arena Thursday (Nov. 14) at 5:30 p.m. in the home opener for Young Harris.
Young Harris opened up an 11-point lead (29-18) after
Bria Clemmons hit a layup with 6:49 remaining in the second quarter. Emmanuel climbed back in the game as they reeled off nine unanswered points to pull within two (29-27) as Locke hit a three-pointer with 5:15 left before halftime. YHC took a 35-33 lead at the intermission as
Kalen Surles hit a layup as time expired.
Again the Mountain Lions got off to a fast start in the third quarter as they scored 12 of the first 17 points as they opened up a 47-38 lead as
Niaya White hit two free throws with 6:09 left in the quarter,
Young Harris took a five-point lead into the final quarter, but Locke sank two free throws with 5:39 to go to knot the score at 54. The Lions would take the lead for good at 61-59 after Morgan Simmons hit a jumper in the paint with 69 seconds remaining. Emmanuel got a Locke layup to push its lead to four, but Clemmons got the Mountain Lions within one at 63-62 on her three pointer with 12 seconds left. Two free throws by Locke, who was a perfect 12-of-12 from the charity stripe, with nine seconds gave the Lions a 65-62 lead.
Carly Winters' three-point attempt for the Mountain Lions to tie the game was not successful.
In addition to her game-high 25 points, she grabbed eight rebounds for Emmanuel. Simmons finished with 17 points.
Sarah Woghiren and White led the Mountain Lions with 14 points, while
Samantha Russell contributed 11. Clemmons added 10 points and seven rebounds for the Mountain Lions.
