YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | Sarah Woghiren and
Niaya White combined for 45 points to lead Young Harris College past Emmanuel (Ga.) College 69-66 in a non-conference women's basketball game Thursday (Nov. 14) evening at the YHC Basketball Arena.
With the win in the home opener, the Mountain Lions improved to 2-1, while the Lions slipped to 1-2. Young Harris hits the road Wednesday (Nov. 20) when they travel to Charlotte, North Carolina, for a 6 p.m. contest against Queens University of Charlotte.
Young Harris, which led for almost 36 minutes, took the lead for good as they used a 13-2 run towards the end of the third quarter to open up a 55-45 lead on two Woghiren free throws with 82 seconds left in the period. White accounted for seven points during the decisive run for the Mountain Lions.
YHC would extend its lead out to as many as 15 points (66-51) on a layup from White with 6:47 left in the game. Emmanusl reeled off the next 13 points to close within a bucket at 66-64 on a Breanna Locke layup with 80 seconds remaining. A
Bria Clemmons layup with 22 seconds gave the Mountain Lions a 68-64 lead. Two free throws from Jazmin Allen seven seconds later cut the YHC lead in half, but
Carly Winters hit one of two free throws to seal the win with 13 seconds left.Â
Woghiren led the Mountain Lions with 23 points, while White tossed in 22 points and grabbed six rebounds. Clemmons tallied seven assists and dished out four assists for Young Harris.
Locke paced Emmanuel with 19 points and 14 rebounds, while Allen added 12 points and six rebounds.
