White, Woghiren lead Mountain Lions past Royals 70-50

CHARLOTTE, N.C. | Niaya White and Sarah Woghiren each scored 13 points to lead Young Harris College past Queens University of Charlotte 70-50 in a non-conference women's basketball game Wednesday (Nov. 20) evening in Curry Arena at the Levine Center.

The Mountain Lions, which led for all but five minutes in the game, improved to 3-1 and will next host Tuskegee University Saturday (Nov. 23) at 5:30 p.m. in the YHC Basketball Arena. The Royals fell to 1-4. 

Queens took its largest lead of the game - five points (10-5) after Caitlyn Moore sank a jump shot with 4:33 left in the first quarter; however, the Mountain Lions scored the next 11 points to open up a 16-10 lead on two Haylie Shope free throws with 76 seconds left in the quarter.

The Mountain Lions pushed their lead to double figures - 11 points (25-14) on a Jada Griffin layup with 7:33 left before intermission.  YHC, which lead 39-24 at the half, kept the foot on the gas in the third quarter as the opened up its largest lead - 37 points (57-30) - after a Griffin layup with 57 seconds left in the period. The closest the Royals would get the rest of the way was 18 points (67-49).

Young Harris limited the Royals to 30.6 percent shooting (19-of-62) from the floor and scored 18 points off 24 turnovers by Queens.

The Mountain Lions had a balance scoring attack. Mackenzie Johnson and Lindsey Caudell eached dropped seven points, while Kalen Surles and Carly Winters had six apiece. Shope led YHC with seven rebounds as Young Harris held a 44-39 margin on the glass. White and Woghiren each grabbed six rebounds, while Johnson and Surles each had five.
