White, Winters lead Mountain Lions past Tigers 70-64 in OT

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | Niaya White scored six of her team-high 16 points in overtime as Young Harris College outlasted Tuskegee University 70-64 in a non-conference women's basketball game Saturday (Nov. 24) evening at the YHC Basketball Arena.

The Mountain Lions won their third consecutive game as they improved to 4-1, while the Golden Tigers slipped to 2-3. Young Harris will now break for the holiday and return to action Dec. 2 when they travel to Rome, Georgia, for a 7 p.m. contest against Shorter University. 

Young Harris opened up its largest lead at nine points (36-27) after Carly Winters sank a three-pointer with 5:38 remaining in the third quarter, but Tuskegee battled back and took s 39-38 lead in the opening minute of the fourth quarter on a Lena Yoonis layup.

The Golden Tigers pushed their lead to as many as five points before the Mountain Lions rallied and sent the game into overtime on Winter's deep three from the top of the key with 0.3 seconds remaining in regulation that tied the game at 58.

Tuskegee scored the first two buckets of overtime to open up a 62-58 lead, but the Mountain Lions took the lead to 66-63 with 43 seconds remaining as White and Winters scored back-to-back layups that were set up by Golden Tiger turnovers. YHC sealed the win by sinking all four free throw attempts in the final 11 seconds. The Mountain Lions, who forced 31 Tuskegee turnovers, were 25-of-39 from the charity stripe, including a perfect 8-for-8 in the extra period.

White had six rebounds in addition to her 16 points, while Winters finished with 15 points and five rebounds. Sarah Woghiren posted 12 points and eight rebounds, while teammate Kalen Surles had a double double with 12 rebounds and 10 points.

Yoonis led Tuskegee with 18 points and 11 rebounds, while India Blakely had 17 points.
