SALISBURY, N.C. | Devin Cooper scored 23 points to lead Catawba College past Young Harris College 94-88 in a non-conference men's basketball at Goodman Gymnasium Saturday (Nov. 24) afternoon.
The Indians improved to 4-1, while the Mountain Lions fell to 0-5. Young Harris breaks for the holiday and returns home Dec. 2 to face Pfeiffer University in a 5 p.m. contest at the YHC Basketball Arena.
Young Harris jumped out to a 15-8 lead on a
Kristian Collins jumper in the paint with 15:35 to go in the first half, but the Indians scored the next seven points to tie the game at 15 on a three-pointer by Cooper less than two minutes later.Â
The Mountain Lions took their final lead at 28-27 on a
Brian Harper layup with 8:40 to go, but Catawba used a 10-2 run to open up a 37-30 lead on a Ben Zemonek tip-in with 6:27 to play. Young Harris got it back to a point (45-44) right before halftime on a
Jonathan King layup after a Harper steal.
Catawba, which led 47-44 at the half, scored the first 11 points of the second half to take a 58-44 lead after a Marcell Haskett three-pointer with 17:56 remaining. Young Harris got it within six points (74-68) on back-to-back threes from
Jacorie Archie and
Ryle Owens with 9:34 to go, but the Indians reeled off 12 unanswered points to take their largest lead - 18 points (86-68) - with 6:41 ro play. The closest the Mountain Lions would get the rest of the way was five points (93-88) with 16 seconds left.
Haskety added 18 points and seven assists, while Malik Constantine (16), Daquan Lillly (13) and Larry McCloud (10) also finished in double figures.
Harper led the Mountain Lions with 19 points, while Archie added 17 points and eight rebounds. Owens and King each finished with 14.
