YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | Clayton State University defeated Young Harris College 64-61 in a Peach Belt Conference women's basketball game Wednesday (Jan. 9) evening at the YHC Basketball Arena.
The Lakers improved to 7-4 overall and 3-2 in the PBC, while the Mountain Lions fell to 3-10 and 1-6. The Mountain Lions return to action Saturday (Jan. 12) on the road in Americus, Georgia, to take on Georgia Southwestern State University in a 1:30 p.m. PBC contest.
Pamela Diokpara scored six of her 11 points in the first quarter, to help the Mountain Lions take a 17-11 advantage going into the second quarter.
Haylie Shope hit a pair of free throws with 30 seconds left in the second quarter to give Young Harris a 29-13 lead before halftime.
Velencia Johnson tied the game at 35 for the Lakers after converting a free throw midway through the third quarter.
Avery Jordan gave the Mountain Lions a 40-39 advantage with a layup at the 2:33 mark in the third. Johnson gave Clayton State the lead for good with a layup with 2:25 left to play in the third.
Pamela Diokpara led the way for Young Harris with a double-double of 11 points and 11 rebounds.
Sarah Woghiren added 10 points and five rebounds, while Jordan tallied 10o points and three rebounds.
Johnson led the Lakers with 19 points and nine rebounds, while Aleisha Merriweather totaled 18 points and nine rebounds. Taneria Wilson added a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds.
