AMERICUS, Ga. | Young Harris College fell to Georgia Southwestern State University 70-55 in a Peach Belt Conference women's basketball game Saturday (Jan. 12) afternoon at the Storm Dome.
The Hurricanes improved to 6-6 overall and 3-3 in the PBC, while the Mountain Lions fell to 3-11 and 1-7. Young Harris returns to action Wednesday (Jan. 16) as they host the University of North Georgia in the Battle of Blood Mountain at 5:30 p.m. in the YHC Basketball Arena. It is also the annual Purple Out game for the Mountain Lions.
Rachel Dobbs tied the game at 12 for the Mountain Lions with a three-pointer at the 1:20 mark in the first quarter. Georgia Southwestern answered with a three-pointer just 15 seconds later to take a 15-12 lead.
Avery Jordan tied the game at 27 for Young Harris with a three-pointer 11 seconds before halftime.
The Hurricanes took the lead (30-27) for good 1:06 into the third quarter after a three-pointer by Morgan Towells.
Pamela Diokpara made it a one point game (40-39) after a made layup at the 2:55 mark in the third quarter. After a
Sarah Reid layup got the Mountain Lions within a point (42-41) with 71 seconds remaining in the quarter, Georgia Southwestern broke the game open with an 18-3 run over the next four minutes to open up a 60-44 lead on a Towells layup with 6:45 to play.
Diokpara recorded a double-double for the Mountain Lions with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Jordan added 10 points and five rebounds, while Reid collected eight points and four rebounds.
Towells totaled 13 points for Georgia Southwestern, while Lele Young added 11 points and Lex Chatman had 10 points and five rebounds.
