Mountain Lions rally for 15-13 win over UVA-Wise

WISE, Va. | Young Harris College scored four unanswered goals late in the second half to rally for a 15-13 non-conference victory over the University of Virginia's College at Wise  on a frigid Saturday (April 7) afternoon at Carl Smith Stadium.

The Mountain Lions improved to 9-5 overall, while the Cavaliers slipped to 6-4. Young Harris travels to Spartanburg, South Carolina, Friday (April 13) for a 3 p.m. match against Converse College.

After Wise took a 11-10 lead on a man-up goal by Jessica Apgar with 12:34 to play, the Mountain Lions scored back-to-back goals in a 13-second span to take a 12-11 advantage. Hayley Bartlett tied the game at 11 on a goal with 11:46 remaining off a Rachel Lepine assist. Lepine won the ensuing draw control and then sprinted down the field and scored the go-ahead goal.

Bartlett then set up the next two goals to give the Mountain Lions a 14-11 lead. Meghan Tonnesen scored with 8:46 left off a Barlett pass before Nicole Kernohan scored 46 seconds later off another Bartlett assist. The Cavaliers scored the next two goals to pull within 14-13, but Erika Cross added an insurance goal with 3:03 left to give YHC a 15-13 victory.

Kernohan led the Mountain Lions with four goals, while Kendra Parenteau notched three more. Lepine, Tonnesen and Cross each deposited two goals for YHC, while Anna Luckie and Bartlett had one apiece. Cross led the way with four assists, while Bartlett had two and Lepine one.

Lepine recorded five draw controls, while Maddie Peek had four and Tonnesen added three more. Julia Darroch scooped up 13 ground balls for the Mountain Lions, while Lepine corralled 10 more. Kelsey Dover picked up five ground balls, while Tonnesen and Bartlett had four each. Lepine also caused five turnovers, while Elli Flaig had three.

Darroch recorded 14 saves in goal for the Mountain Lions.
