INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. | Young Harris College held Maryville (Mo.) University scoreless for 46 minutes in one stretch as the top seeded Mountain Lions recorded a 11-4 victory in the semifinals of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament at Key Stadium Friday (April 27) afternoon.
The Mountain Lions, who have won their last 13 games, improved to 13-3 and will face the University of Indianapolis, which defeated the University of Alabama in Huntsville 16-6 in the other semifinals, in Sunday's (April 29) 1 p.m. final. No. 4 seed Maryville fell to 5-12.
Young Harris took a 1-0 lead 69 seconds into the match as GLVC Player of the Year
Bevan Pate scored. Maryville scored the next two goals, before
Chandler Bradley leveled the match at 2 off a Pate assist with 4:55 left in the first quarter. The Saints reclaimed the lead at 3-2 on a Tristan Snellgrove with 2:34 remaining. It would be the last Maryville goal for the next 46 minutes and four seconds as Young Harris took control of the match with eight unanswered goals. Maryville, which was limited to just 14 shots and committed 16 turnovers, wouldn't find the back of the net until there was 90 seconds left in the match.
Garrett Blake and
Daniel Zimny scored 56 seconds apart early in the second quarter as the Mountain Lions took the lead for good a 4-3. Pate added another score and Blake scored with three seconds remaining in the second quarter as the Mountain Lions opened up a 6-3 halftime lead.
Pate and
Bruce Silk scored in the third quarter, while Pate added a man-up goal and
Matty Ledon added another in the fourth quarter to take a 10-3 lead with 7:23 remaining in the match.
Pate led the Mountain Lions with five goals, while Blake added two. Silk, Bradley, Ledon and Zimny each tallied one. Pate and Zimny each assisted on two goals, while Silk,
Jimmy Martelli, Blake and Ledon had one apiece.
Young Harris had a 40-14 advantage on shots, while the Mountain Lions held a 35-17 margin in ground balls. YHC also won all 17 face-offs. GLVC Specialty Player of the Year
Zach Stephenson collected 17 face-off wins and scooped up 14 ground balls.
Alex Venturino corralled five ground balls, while
Julian Infanti and Pate had four each.
Jake Dunlop and Martelli had two caused turnovers apiece.
Mason King made his first start of the year in the circle for the Mountain Lions and he picked up four saves in goal.
