Greyhounds slip past Mountain Lions 12-8 in GLVC Tournament finals

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. | The University of Indianapolis broke open a close game with five goals in the third quarter as the No. 2 seeded Greyhounds defeated top seed Young Harris College 12-8 in the championship game of the inaugural Great Lakes Valley Conference Men's Lacrosse Tournament Sunday (April 29) afternoon at Key Stadium.

UIndy, which lost their regular-season meeting with the Mountain Lions 11-7 in March, improved to 9-5, while Young Harris, which won the GLVC regular-season title, saw their 13-game winning streak - the longest in program history - come to an end as they concluded its 2018 season at 13-4. The 13 wins in a season are the most ever for the Mountain Lions.

Young Harris took a 1-0 lead on a man-up goal from Garrett Blake with 9:33 left in the first quarter before Uindy reeled off three goals in a 90-second span to take a 3-1 lead with 7:07 to go in the quarter. Zach Stephenson, who won nine face-offs, took the ensuing face-off and deposited the ball in the back of the net five seconds later for the Mountain Lions. YHC took a 4-3 lead at the end of the first quarter as they added scores from Jimmy Martelli and Bruce Silk.

The Mountain Lions held a 6-5 lead at the half as both teams scored twice in the second quarter. Nolan Moon scored with 10:55 remaining in the period while Silk added another goal as time expired.

Undy got back-to-back goals in a 37-second span midway in the third quarter, before Silk tied the game at 7 with 4:30 remaining in the period. The Greyhounds took control of the game as they scored the next four goals to open up an 11-7 lead after Parker Johnson scored with 14:42 left in the fourth quarter.

The Mountain Lions got a goal back as Martelli scored with 6:57 remaining in the match to get within 11-8, but that would be the last goal of the 2018 season for Young Harris.

UIndy held an edge in shots (42-31) and faceoffs (12-9), while Young Harris held a 26-22 margin in ground balls.

Silk led YHC in goals with three, while Martelli had two. Moon,  Blake and Stephenson accounted for a goal each. Pate led the Mountain Lions with two assists, while Silk, Chandler Bradley, Moon and Daniel Zimny had one apiece. Jake Dunlop and Stephenson led the way with five ground balls, while Matty Ledon and Julian Infanti each scooped up four,

Mason King stopped 14 shots in goal for the Mountain Lions.
