Young Harris wins inaugural GLVC title behind 15-6 win over Chargers

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. | Bevan Pate and Garrett Blake each scored four goals to lead Young Harris College past the University of Alabama in Huntsville 15-6 in a Great Lakes Valley Conference men's lacrosse match Saturday (April 21) afternoon at Charger Park.

With their 12th consecutive victory, the Mountain Lions claimed the inaugural GLVC regular season title as they improved to 12-3 overall and to 5-0 inside the league. By virtue of the title, Young Harris will be the No. 1 seed at the GLVC Tournament that will be played in Indianapolis, Indiana, Friday (April 27). UAH fell to 8-6 and 3-2.

Pate and Blake each found the back of the net to give Young Harris an early 2-0 lead before UAH tied the game at 2 with 3:43 left in the first quarter. The Mountain Lions took control of the match as they scored four unanswered goals - Bruce Silk bookended two goals by Daniel Zimny - to open up a 6-2 lead with 10:23 before halftime.

UAH got two goals from Kevin Coppinger before Young Harris scored the next five - three in a row from Blake and one each from Pate and Bruce Silk - as they took an 11-4 lead with 5:02 remaining in the third quarter.

The Mountain Lions scored four of the five goals in the fourth quarter. Pate scored twice while Jimmy Martelli and Chandler Bradley also added a goal each.

Silk and Pate each dished out two assists for the Mountain Lions, while Matty Ledon and Zimny had one each.

Young Harris held a 34-31 edge in shots, 26-21 advantage in ground balls and won 19 of the 23 face-offs contested. Zach Stephenson led the Mountain Lions with 19 face-offs and 13 ground balls. Jake Dunlop scooped up four ground balls, while Julian Infanti and Parker Lamarque had two each.

YHC goalies Sean Dever (five) and Ledon (six) combined to turn away 11 UAH shots.
