MONTEVALLO, Ala. | Bevan Pate and
Matty Ledon combined to score five goals as Young Harris College defeated the University of Montevallo 10-7 in a Great Lakes Valley Conference men's lacrosse match Friday (April 13) evening.
The Mountain Lions won their 11th consecutive match as they improved to 11-3 overall and to 4-0 in the conference, securing at least a share of the inaugural GLVC regular-season title. Young Harris can claim the title outright with a victory next Saturday (April 21) when they travel to Huntsville, Alabama, for a 4 p.m. Central time contest against the University of Alabama in Huntsville. Montevallo fell to 6-7 and 0-4.
Bruce Silk gave YHC a 1-0 lead on a goal 49 seconds into the match before the Falcons scored twice to take a 2-1 lead with 2:09 left in the first quarter. Pate's strike with 52 seconds left in the quarter tied the match at 2.
Ledon and Pate scored goals about a minute apart midway through the second quarter gave YHC a 4-2 lead with 7:11 to play. Montevallo got a goal back eight seconds later, but
Daniel Zimny scored right before halftime to give Young Harris a 5-3 lead at the intermission.
Montevallo got within a goal at 7-6 after Thomas Vaesen scored with 9:16 left in the match, but
Nolan Moon scored off a Pate assist a minute later to push the margin back to 8-6. After the Falcons got a goal back, the Mountain Lions got back-to-back scores from Pate and
Chandler Bradley to open up a 10-7 lead with 3:57 remaining.
Pate finished with three goals for the Mountain LIons, while Ledon had two. Silk, Bradley,
Jimmy Martelli, Moon and Zimny accounted for a goal each.
Garrett Blake and Zimny dished out two assists each, while Martelli, Pate,
Hayes Johnson and Moon had an assist apiece.
Young Harris outshot the Falcons 44-23 and had a 48-26 edge in ground balls. The Mountain Lions also won 18 of the 19 face-offs contested.
Zach Stephenson won 18 face-offs and scooped up 15 ground balls.
Julian Infanti had six ground balls, while Bradley corralled five more. Silk and Bradley also accounted for four ground balls each, while Ledon added three more.
Sean Dever recorded eight saves in goal for the Mountain Lions.
