CENTRAL, S.C. | Southern Wesleyan University used a six-run fifth inning to edge past Young Harris College 11-9 in a non-conference baseball game Wednesday (April 11) evening at C. Keith Conner Field.
The Warriors improved to 15-27, while the Mountain Lions fell to 21-18. Young Harris opens a Peach Belt Conference weekend series with the University of South Carolina-Aiken Friday (April 13)Â at 6 p.m. at Zell B. Miller Field.
Young Harris took a 4-3 lead with a three-run third inning.
Tyler Washington stroked a double to right field to score the first run before
Cory Ewald smacked a two-run homer - his seventh of the seasn.
The Mountain Lions extended their lead to 6-4 with single runs in the fourth and fifth inings. Washington laced an RBI single in the fourth, while
Zavier Lushington added a run-scoring single to right an inning later.
The Warriors took the lead for good in the bottom half of the inning as they sent 11 batters to the plate, scoring six times.Â
Young Harris, which outhit Southern Wesleyan 14-12, got a run back in the seventh on a sacrifice fly and two more in the eighth on
Rudy Gaona's two-run homer to right field to get within two runs at 11-9. It was Gaona's team-leading eighth long ball of 2018.
Vinny Adams (3-1) earned the win in relief, while
Hudson Graham (2-1) absorbed the loss.
Washington and Lushington led the Mountain Lions with three hits apiece, while Ewald had two. Washington, Gaona, and Ewald also drove in two runs each for Young Harris.
