Saint Leo rallies to edge Young Harris 19-16

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | Saint Leo University scored five unanswered goals in three-minute span midway through the second half to rally for a 19-16 non-conference women's lacrosse victory over Young Harris College Saturday (March 24) afternoon at the YHC Soccer and Lacrosse Field.,

The Lions improved to 8-2, while the Mountain Lions fell to 6-5. Young Harris steps back into Gulf South Conference action Wednesday (March 28) with a 4 p.m. contest against Lee University in Cleveland, Tennessee.

Saint Leo opened up a 12-7 lead 35 seconds into the second half on a Sarah Pierson goal, but the Mountain Lions rattled off six consecutive scores - two from Nicole Kernohan and one each from Meghan Tonnesen, Kendra Parenteau, Rachel Lepine - to take a 13-12 lead with 20:02 to play on a Mary Deatrick strike.

Saint Leo got three goals from Katherine Larson in a 56-second span to regain a 15-13 advantage with 15:35 to play. Leslie Ferguson and Abbie Ross added SLU goals as the Lions opened a 17-13 lead two minutes later. YHC got back-to-back goals from Lepine and Kernohan to get as close as 17-15 with 11:40 left, but that would be as close as the Mountain Lions would get.

Kerrnohan led the Mountain Lion attack with six goals, while Parenteau added three more. Hayley Bartlett, Lepine, and Deatrick each finished with two goals, while Tonnesen added one. Bartlett had two assists, while Erika Cross, Kelsey Dover, Kernohan and Lepine had one apiece.

Saint Leo held a 38-34 edge in shots and a 26-25 edge in ground balls. The Lions won 22 of the 37 draw controls. Deatrick, Lepine and Tonnesen had four draw controls each, while Lepine corralled five ground balls. Hannah Sacristan, Bartlett and Cross each scooped up three ground balls. Rachel Robb and Julia Darroch each stopped six shots in goal for the Mountain Lions.
