Mountain Lions race past No. 19 Greyhounds 11-7

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | Young Harris College scored eight of nine goals in one stretch in the middle of the game as the Mountain Lions defeated No. 19 University of Indianapolis 11-7 in a Great Lakes Valley Conference men's lacrosse match Saturday (March 17) afternoon at the YHC Soccer and Lacrosse Field.

The Mountain Lions moved into sole possession in the GLVC standings at 2-0 as Young Harris extended its college-record win streak to eight  with the Mountain Lions improving to 3-2. It was their second victory over a nationally ranked opponent this season as they beat then-No. 19 Florida Institute of Technology last month. Young Harris returns to action March 30 with a 7 p.m. GLVC match against Shorter University in Rome, Georgia. The Greyhounds fell to 3-3 overall and to 1-1 in the GLVC.

UIndy took a 3-1 lead after Tyler Johnston scored the second of his two first quarter scores with 48 seconds left. The Mountain Lions got strikes from Jimmy Martelli and Daniel Zimny in the second quarter to tie the match at 3 with 4:45 to go. The Greyhounds took a 4-3 halftime lead when they scored on a Kenny Keyes goal with 1:44 left in the quarter.

The Mountain Lions scored six unanswered goals in the third quarter and the opening minutes of the fourth quarter as they took a 9-4 lead on a Bevan Pate score with 12:56 remaining in the fourth quarter. Pate scored three of the goals in the decisive run by YHC. Garrett Blake, Matty Ledon and Chandler Bradley accounted for the other goals in the run.

UIndy responded with three fourth quarter goals to pull within three (10-7) with 1:57 to play, but Zimny added an insurance goal with 44 seconds left to seal  the YHC victory.

Indianapolis held a 46-23 advantage in shots, but Young Harris goalie Sean Dever was up to the task as he recorded a college-record 21 saves, two more than the old record of 19 set by Bobby Parker in 2013 against Huntingdon College.

Pate led the offensive attack for the Mountain Lions with three goals, while Ledon and Zimny found the back of the net twice. Blake, Nolan Moon, Martelli and Bradley had a goal apiece. Ledon and Zimny posted three assists each, while Blake and Bruce Silk had one each.

Zach Stephenson won 10 face-offs and collected eight ground balls. Dever and Alex Venturino had three each for YHC.
