Mountain Lions clip Hawks 23-6 for ninth win in a row

ROME, Ga. | Bruce Silk and Garrett Blake each scored six goals as Young Harris College recorded a 23-6 Great Lakes Valley Conference men's lacrosse victory over Shorter University Friday (March 30) evening at Ben Brady Field.

The Mountain Lions won their school-record ninth match in a row as they improved to 9-3 overall and remain in first place in the GLVC with a 3-0 ledger. The Hawks sank to 1-10 and 0-3. Young Harris returns to the YHC Soccer and Lacrosse Field for the final time this season April 7 when they host North Greenville University in a 1 p.m. non-conference match.

After Shorter took a 3-1 lead midway through the first quarter, Young Harris took control of the match as they scored the next 10 goals as they opened up an 11-3 lead 63 seconds into the third quarter. Blake scored three goals during the decisive run, while Daniel Zimny and Silk had two goals each.

After the Hawks scored 37 seconds later, YHC scored 12 of the next 13 goals - including nine straight at one point - to open up a 23-5 lead on a man-down goal from Matty Ledon with 34 seconds to play. Silk lead the Mountain Lions with four goals during that run, while Blake and Duncan Jackson each found the back of the net twice.

Jackson, Jimmy Martelli, Bevan Pate, Ledon and Zimny had two goals apiece for the Mountain Lions, who outshot Shorter 43-23 (34-13 on goal). Pate paced Young Harris with four assists, while Zimny added three. Ledon and Martelli each recorded an assist.

Young Harris claimed 20 face-off wins, including 18 from Zach Stephenson, who also scooped up 15 ground balls.  Alex Venturino and Pate also corralled three ground balls, while Julian Infanti, Chandler Bradley and Ledon had two apiece.
