Mountain Lions, Jaguars split PBC doubleheader

AUGUSTA, Ga. | Young Harris College and Augusta University split a Peach Belt Conference baseball doubleheader Saturday (March 10) afternoon at Lake Olmstead Stadium.

Devin Bilardello and Zack Goble combined to drive in seven runs as Augusta won the opener 12-4 before the Mountain Lions worked themselves out of a four-run deficit to win the nightcap 5-4.

Young Harris, which won its third PBC series of the season, improved to 10-11 overall and to 6-6 inside the Peach Belt, while Augusta slipped to 7-16 and 5-10. The Mountain Lions return to Zell B. Miller Field Wednesday (March 14) for a 4 p.m. contest against Lenoir-Rhyne University.

After Augusta jumped out to 4-0 lead after two innings in game two, the Mountain Lions rallied for four unearned runs in the third to tie the score at 4. Royce Woolfolk started the inning with a walk and moved to second when Logan Worley reached on an error. Brett Graczyk drove in the first run on his single to right before Corley Reynolds' ground out drove in another.  The Mountain Lions added another run on a fielding error by the Jags before tying the game on Zavier Lushington's single to left field.

It would stay that way until sixth when the Mountain Lions took advantage of some wildness from Augusta starter Sam Goberdhan (0-3). Tyler Washington started the winning rally with a walk and moved over to second after Woolfolk was hit by a pitch.  Graczyk singled back up the middle to score Washington and give the Mountain Lions a 5-4 lead.

YHC reliever McLain Harris (1-3) made that Mountain Lion lead stand. Over five innings, Harris scattered three hits while striking out a career-high seven.

Graczyk and Jackson Jones led the Mountain Lions with two hits. Jones laced a double to right-center field in the seventh.

In the opener, eight of Augusta's 16 hits went for extra bases as they jumped out to a 6-1 lead after four innings.

The Mountain Lions got within 6-4 after Cory Ewald smacked a two-run homer down the left field line in the sixth. It was his team-leading third long ball of 2018. However, that was as close as they would get as the Jaguars scored three runs in both the sixth and eighth innings.

Jay Pendley (3-1) earned the win for the Jaguars as he struck out six in 5.1 innings, while Mat Szabo (2-2) took the loss as he surrender six runs in 3.2 innings.

Rudy Gaona, Washington and Graczyk each had two hits for the Mountain Lions. Gaona, Washington and Graczyk each had a double in the opener. Gaona and Reynolds also drove in runs for YHC.
