Mountain Lions clip Hawks with pair of wins in final at-bats

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga.  | Young Harris College landed a pair of game-winning hits to sweep a NCAA Division II baseball doublehheader Shorter University Thursday (Feb. 8) afternoon ar Zell B. Miller Field.

Logan Worley's RBI single in the bottom of the ninth gave the Mountain Lions a 5-4 win in the opener before Rudy Gaona's single in the seventh gave Young Harris a sweep with a 3-2 win in the nightcap.

The Mountain Lions improved to 2-3 on the season, while the Hawks fell to 2-4. The two teams wrap up their three-game series Friday (Feb. 9) at 1 p.m.

Shorter started the scoring in game one after a first inning single to center by Samyr Santos that scored Raul Cortes. The Mountain Lions answered back in the bottom of the first with a double to right center field by Cory Ewald that scored Bailey Campbell and Gaona to take a 2-1 lead. Campbell connected with the 1-0 pitch in the bottom of the third that sent his first career home run over the right field fence to extend the Young Harris lead 3-1.

The Hawks took the lead 4-3 in the top of the seventh inning after Luis Acevedo hit a three-run home run over to right field. Worley tied the game at 4 in the bottom half of the inning for the Mountain Lions as he singled to left field that allowed Brett Graczyk to score. Worley had the  the game-winning hit off reliever Peyton Moore (0-1)  for Young Harris in the bottom of the ninth as he singled up the middle and sent Corley Reynolds around to score. 

Daniel McKee (1-0) earned his first win of the season for the Mountain Lions as he pitched two scoreless innings of relief. Michael Livingston earned a no decision as he gave up four runs (two earned) on three hits and struck out five over seven innings. 

Worley, Graczyk and Gaona had two hits apiece for the Mountain LIons.

Young Harris took a 2-0 lead in the nightcap with unearned runs in the first and second innings. Jackson Jones singled through the right side to score Graczyk in the first, while Worley added the second run an inning later after a single to left center that scored Reynolds. Shorter scored twice in the third to tie the game at 2 on a sacrifice fly by Cortes  and Ivan Nunez scored on a wild pitch. 

Jacob Ramos (0-1) retired 11 batters for the Hawks after a double by Jones in the third inning until Royce Woolfolk started the winning rally in the seventh with a bunt single back to Ramos. Gaona stepped up to the plate for the Mountain Lions with the bases loaded and sent the 2-1 pitch to right field that allowed Skylor Murphy to come across with the deciding run. 

Dylan Gibeau (1-1) earned his first win of the season as he gave up just one hit and struck out four in three innings of scoreless relief. Gibeau worked out of a sticky situation in the fifth with runners on second and third base with no outs, but Gibeau struck out the side to wiggle out of any damage.

Graczyk and Jones had two hits apiece for the Mountain Lions.
