Mountain Lions capture Hurricane Invitational

Results

ALBANY, Ga. |
The third time was the charm for the Young Harris College men's golf team Tuesday (Feb. 27) afternoon.

The Mountain Lions had finished tied for first place in two tournaments - Matt Dyas Invitational and Spring Kick-off Intercollegiate - this season only to lose them in scorecard playoffs. Young Harris didn't let that happen as they won the Hurricane Invitational hosted by Georgia Southwestern State University.

Young Harris had the low round of the day (291) on the par 72, 7,024-yard layout at the Doublegate Country Club as they finished the rain-shortened 36-hole tournament with a score of 580. They finished two strokes better than first-round leader Georgia Southwestern State, which had led YHC by seven strokes.

"Really proud of our guys this week," said Young Harris director of golf Caleb Kelley. "Everyone contributed and It was a great team win. It's always tough when your dealing with inclement weather and delays, but the team did a great job of staying focused and battled for all 36 holes. We have about a month gap before our next event, so we will take a little break and then get back to work for the Bearcat Invitational."

It was the sixth tournament win in the program's NCAA era history, but only the second in a tournament this size. The other wins came in tournament with six or less teams.

David Wallin was named to the all-tournament team after shooting a 73 to finish in third place at 143, Anton Karlbom recorded his first career top-five finish as he tied for fourth place at 144 after posting a two-under par 70 in the final round. Valter Andersson and Trey Pearson narrowly missed a top-10 effort as they tied for 11th place at 147. Both posted final rounds of 74. John Bolger carded a 78 and tied for 26th place at 151.

Georgia Southwestern State's Vincent Norman earned medalist honors at 134, six strokes better than Clayton State University's Nick Woof.

Young Harris returns to action March 26 when they travel to Greenwood, South Carolina, to compete in the Lander Bearcat Golf Classic. The Mountain LIons won the tournament when they last competed in the event (2016).
