Bears edge Mountain Lions 5-4

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga.  |  Truett-McConnell University defeated Young Harris College 5-4 in a non-conference baseball game Tuesday (Feb. 27) afternoon at Zell B. Miller Field. 

The Bears improved to 8-5 overall, while the Mountain Lions fell to 6-9. Young Harris returns to action Friday (March 2) as they open up a three-game Peach Belt Conference home series against the No. 21 University of North Carolina at Pembroke at 6 p.m. 

Truett-McConnell scored first in the second inning after a RBI single to center field by Mason Gaines that scored Josh Johnston. Young Harris answered back in the bottom half of the inning with a sacrifice fly by Royce Woolfolk that scored Bradley Klees

The Bears added two in the fourth inning with a RBI double to right center by Austin Thomas and a RBI single by Patrick Overstreet to take a 3-1 lead.

Corley Reynolds brought the score within one (3-2) with a double to right center in the bottom of the fourth to score Cory Ewald for the Mountain Lions. 

Truett-McConnell extended the lead (4-2) with a leadoff home run by Andrew Fogarty in the fifth inning. 

Young Harris tied the game at 4 in the bottom of the fifth. It  started with a RBI double to right center by Rudy Gaona that scored Skylor Murphy. Ewald picked up the second run of the inning with a RBI groundout to short stop that allowed Jackson Jones to score. 

The Bears took a 5-4 lead run in the seventh inning after Johnston scored on a wild pitch by Blake Metivier (0-1). 

Cason Brown (2-0) picked up the win for Truett-McConnell as he allowed three runs on seven hits with one walk and seven strikeouts in five innings of relief. Craig Barton got his first save of the season with a scoreless ninth inning. 

Jones and Tyler Washington each collected two hits. Gaona, Ewald, and Reynolds tallied one hit and one RBI apiece. Woolfolk picked up one RBI while Bailey Campbell had one hit.
