Jones' grand slam leads Mountain Lions past No. 21 Braves 8-4

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga.  |  Jackson Jones hit a game-ending grand slam as part of a seven-run ninth inning as Young Harris College defeated No. 21 University of North Carolina at Pembroke 8-4 in a Peach Belt Conference baseball game Friday (March 2) at Zell B. Miller Field. 

The Mountain Lions improved to 7-9 overall and 3-4 in the PBC, while the Braves fell to 11-2 and 5-2. The two teams return to action Saturday (March 3) for game two of the weekend series at 2 p.m. at Zell B. Miller Field. 

UNC Pembroke scored first in the third inning with a RBI groundout to shortstop by Roberto Rivera to score Kevon Perkins. The Braves added another run in the fourth inning with a solo home run by Seth Hastings, his third of the season. 

UNCP plated two runs in the sixth inning with a double to left center by Trey Jacobs that scored Ethan Baucom. Jacobs later scored by a RBI infield single to the shortstop by Connor Grainger. 

Bradley Klees put Young Harris on the board in the bottom of the seventh inning with his first home run of the season that went over the left field fence. 

The Mountain Lions led off the bottom of the ninth inning with back-to-back singles by Rudy Gaona and Cory Ewald. After Klees drew a walk, Corley Reynolds hit into a double play that allowed Gaona to score. Ewald scored on a wild pitch to bring Young Harris within one run (4-3). 

Logan Worley reached on a fielding error that scored Royce Woolfolk to tie the game at 4. Skylor Murphy was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Jones. 

Jones quickly got behind in the count (1-2) then sent the next pitch over the right field fence for the game-ending grand slam, his second home run of the season. 

Jake Tomelevage (2-0) picked up  the win for the Mountain Lions as he allowed just one hit in 1.2 innings of scoreless relief. 

Jones finished with one hit and four RBI while Klees tallied two hits, one RBI and a run scored. Murphy, Gaona, Ewald, and Tristin Smith each collected one hit and one run scored. 

Cole Lovin (1-1) earned the loss for the Braves as he recorded no outs and allowed three unearned runs.
