Mountain Lions win first-ever GLVC match with 13-5 win over Maryville (Mo.)

Bruce Silk scored five goals as Young Harris College was victorious in its first-ever Great Lakes Valley Conference men's lacrosse match Friday (Feb. 23) evening at the YHC Soccer and Lacrosse Field. The Mountain Lions defeated Maryville (Mo.) University 13-5.

The Mountain Lions, who received votes in the USILA Coaches poll this week, improved to 2-3 overall and to 1-0 in the GLVC, while the Saints fell to 2-2 and 0-1. Young Harris will host Emmanuel (Ga.) College in a 2 p.m. match Sunday (Feb. 25).

Silk scored the first goal of the match with 12:14 remaining in the first quarter off an assist from Bevan Pate. The Mountain Lions never trailed in the match. Silk added another goal as YHC took a 2-1 lead after the first quarter.

Billy Magill and Silk added strikes to start the second quarter and Matty Ledon added a goal with seven seconds left before halftime to give Young Harris a 5-2 lead.

Ledon added back-to-back goals to start the third stanza to give the Mountain Lions a 7-2 lead. Young Harris got back-to-back man-up goals by Chandler Bradley to end the third quarter and Silk to start the fourth to open up a 9-3 margin. Pate added two more goals for the Mountain Lions in the fourth quarter, while Silk and Jake Dunlop added a goal each.

Maryville held a 30-29 edge in shots, while the Mountain Lions had advantages in ground balls (30-21) and face-offs (17-5). 

Zach Stephenson won 17 face-offs for Young Harris and led the squad with 14 ground balls. Alex Venturino scooped up three ground balls and caused three turnovers, while Sean Dever, Kyle Beverly and Magill had two ground balls. Dever corralled 14 saves in the Mountain Lion goal.
