Mountain Lions claw past Bobcats 85-69 on Senior Day

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga.  |  Five players scored in double digits for Young Harris College as they defeated Georgia College 85-69 in a Peach Belt Conference men's basketball game Wednesday (Feb. 21) evening at the YHC Basketball Arena.

The Mountain Lions improved to 8-19 overall and 7-14 in the PBC, while the Bobcats fell to 11-16 and 7-14. Young Harris returns to action Saturday (Feb. 24) as they travel to Aiken, South Carolina,  to take on the University of South Carolina-Aiken in a 3:30 p.m. PBC contest.

J.B Charles gave the Mountain Lions the lead (4-2) for good after hitting a layup at the 18:30 mark in the first half. Charles put Young Harris up by 10 (14-4) after draining a three-pointer with 15:45 left in the half. Zion Williams extended the Mountain Lion lead to 15 (29-14) after a three-pointer with 10:31 to play in the first half.

Chapin Rierson made it a nine-point game for the Bobcats (46-35) with a three-pointer with 58 seconds left in the first half.

Georgia College fought back in the second half, as they made it a five-point game (59-54) after a jumper by Rierson with 8:32 remaining.

"If we defend, we are going to be successful," said Young Harris head coach Pete Herrmann. "Because we defended and outrebounded them, we were able to generate our fast break the way we want. That's our game.

"I thought every guy contributed," added Herrmann. "I thought when we pressed them in the middle of the second half, we were able speed them up and was able to get them to turn the ball over."

Ben Waterhouse extended the Young Harris lead to 20 (81-61) with a free throw at the 2:23 mark after they went on a 20-7 run over the next seven minutes. Nicksen Blanc scored eight of his 14 points during this Mountain Lion run.

Charles finished with 19 points and five rebounds for Young Harris. Blanc totaled 14 points and seven rebounds while Corey Nelson tallied 13 points and eight rebounds. Waterhouse finished with 13 points and Williams scored 10 points.

Kohl Roberts finished with a double double of 12 points and 11 rebounds for the Bobcats. Jordan Thomas tallied 13 points while Rierson scored 12 points and Isaac Thomas totaled 10 points and nine rebounds.

Young Harris recognized its five seniors - Waterhouse, Charles, Nelson, Alex Pack, and Angus Howey - who played in the final home game of their careers prior to the game, .
