YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | Eleven Young Harris College players found the back of the net as the Mountain Lions defeated the University of Montevallo 22-11 in a Gulf South Conference women's lacrosse match Sunday (Feb. 18) afternoon at the YHC Soccer and Lacrosse Field.
The Mountain Lions improved to 3-0 overall and to 3-0 in the Gulf South, while the Falcons slipped to 3-2 and 0-1. Young Harris will return to action Feb. 28 when they will entertain GSC-foe Lee University in a 4 p.m. home match.
Young Harris took control of the match as they scored the first six goals over first nine minutes of the game.
Nicole Kernohan had two of the goals during the decisive outburst.
Kendra Parenteau,
Maddie Peek,
Anna Luckie and
Rachel Lepine accounted for the other strikes.
After the Falcons got their first goal from Nicole Pahnke, the Mountain Lions scored four unanswered goals to take a 10-1 lead at the 13:46 mark on the second of two
Mary Deatrick scores in the run, Luckie and
Erika Cross had the other two YHC goals.
The closest the Falcons would get the rest of the way was six goals (11-5), but the Mountain Lions quashed any thoughts of Montevallo rally by scoring the next five goals to take a 16-5 lead.
YHC held a 38-30 advantage in shots and a 19-18 edge in ground balls. The Mountain Lions also won 20 of the 35 ground balls.
Leigh Anne Turner, Parenteau and Cross led the way with three goals each, while Deatrick, Lepine, Luckie,
Channing Milford and Kernohan each scored twice. Peek,
Meghan Tonnesen and Hayley Barlett also found the back of the net. Parenteau added two assists, while Kernohan and Cross had one each.
Tonnessen recorded seven draw controls while
Kirsten Barth had six more. Deatrick and Lepine also picked up three draw controls each.
Rachel Robb and Milford led the way with four ground balls, while Lepine and Tonnesen each scooped up two.
Robb and
Julia Darroch each recorded seven saves each in net for the Mountain Lions.
Pahnke scored seven of Montevallo's 11 goals.
