YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | Kendra Parenteau scored seven goals to lead the Young Harris College women's lacrosse team to an 18-15 Gulf South Conference victory over the University of Alabama in Huntsville Saturday (Feb. 17) afternoon at the YHC Soccer and Lacrosse Field.
Young Harris improved to 2-0 overall and to 2-0 in the Gulf South, while the Chargers fell to 1-1 amd 0-1. The teams shared the GSC regular season championship last season and the two teams have faced each other in the past two GSC postseason championship matches. Young Harris will stay in conference as they host the University of Montevallo in a 1 p.m. match Sunday (Feb. 18)..
After UAH took a 4-3 lead on a Alanna Carvalho goal with 22:39 remaining in the first half, the Mountain Lions created some distance between the two teams as they scored the next four goals to open up a 7-4 lead on a Parenteau free-position shot with 15:33 left. Young Harris also got a man-up goal from Parenteau and a man-down goal from
Anna Luckie sandwiched around a
Rachel Lepine strike.
The Chargers closed to within a goal at 8-7 before Young Harris got back-to-back goals fom
Maddie Peek to open up a 10-7 lead with 2:16 left. Young Harris, which led 10-8 at the half, got goals from from
Mary Deatrick,
Hayley Bartlett and Lepine to start the second half to open up a 13-8 lead with 27:57 to play.
UAH got as close as 14-12, but Parenteau scored back-to-back goals to give the Mountain Lions a 16-12 lead with 16:21 remaining. Again the Chargers got within two goals (16-14), but Parenteau thwarted the UAH rally with two more goals to give Young Harris a 18-14 lead with 5:03 to play.
UAH held leads of 37-29 in shots and 17-16 in ground balls, but the Mountain Lions won 24 of the 35 draw controls.
Lepine finished with three goals for the Mountain Lions, while Deatrick, Peek and
Nicole Kernohan had two each. Luckie and Bartlett added a goal each.
Erika Cross and Deatrick dished out two assists, whil
Kirsten Barth and Peek had one each. Leping won seven draw controls, while Deatrick had six.
Meghan Tonnesen collected five draw controls, while Barth had four.
Julia Darroch led the way with four ground balls, while
Hannah Sacristan scooped up three.
Darroch had 14 saves in net for the Mountain Lions.
