Cougars race past Mountain Lions

COLUMBUS, Ga.  |  Five players scored in double figures for Columbus State University as they defeated Young Harris College 89-57 in a Peach Belt Conference women's basketball game Saturday (Feb. 17) afternoon at the Lumpkin Center. 

The Cougars improved to 16-8 overall and 14-6 in the PBC, while the Mountain Lions fell to 9-18 and 6-14. Young Harris returns to action Wednesday (Feb. 21) as they host Georgia College in a 5:30 p.m. PBC contest at the YHC Basketball Arena. The team will host its seniors between games of the basketball doubleheader.

Sara Jorgensen hit a free throw with six seconds left in the first quarter to give the Mountain Lions a 14-10 lead. Tatiana Wayne tied the game at 18 for Columbus State with a jumper at the 6:47 mark in the second quarter. The Cougars ended the quarter on a 17-6 run, giving them a 35-24 lead going into halftime. 

Columbus State started the third quarter on a 16-5 run over the first 4:34 to take a 51-29 lead. The Cougars went on a 10-2 run over the last 4:42 to give them a 61-36 advantage going into the final quarter. 

Ashlyn Ellison scored four of her 10 points in the fourth quarter as she went 4-for-4 at the free throw line. Elle Hutchinson went 3-for-5 in the fourth quarter, scoring six points. Columbus State ended the scoring after a jumper by Kristian Carter with 22 seconds left to make the score 89-57. 

Wayne finished with a double double of game-high 19 points and 10 rebounds for the Cougars. Machala Raymonville scored 16 points and totaled seven rebounds. Tatum Jarvis scored 15 points and grabbed seven rebounds while Eboni Williams tallied 14 points and six rebounds. Chrisalyn Boston ended with 10 points and five rebounds. 

Ellison scored a team-high 10 points. Jorgensen finished with nine points and four rebounds. Sarah Garner had six points and six rebounds.
