FLORENCE, S.C. | Eryn Cochran and
Ashlyn Ellison combined to scored 41 points as the Young Harris College women's basketball team edged Francis Marion University 85-82 in overtime in a Peach Belt Conference contest Tuesday (Feb. 13) afternoon at the Smith University Center.
The game was delayed a day due to the lack of officials Monday (Feb. 12) evening.Â
Young Harris won its second overtime game of the season as they improved to 9-16 overall and moved into a tie for eighth place in the PBC with a 6-12 ledger. Francis Marion fell to 13-10 and 10-8. Young Harris travels to Greenwood, South Carolina, Thursday (Feb. 15) for a 5:30 p.m. Peach Belt game against Lander University.
Francis Marion forced the extra period as Shaunice Fulmore nailed a three-pointer from the top of the key with 14.3 seconds in regulation that tied the game at 78. Young Harris had taken a 78-75 lead 10 seconds earlier on two free throws from
Sarah Garner. The Mountain Lions connected on 24-of-30 (.800) free throws in the win. The 24 free throws were the second most in a game for YHC this season.
For most of the overtime, the teams traded the lead back and forth until
Briana Bell's jumper with 20 seconds remaining gave the Mountain Lions the lead for good at 83-82. On the ensuing possession, Francis Marion was called for an offensive foul and
Sara Jorgensen added two insurance free throws with two free throws to give Young Harris an 85-82 with four seconds left. The Patriots had one last opportunity to tie the game, but FMU missed a three-pointer.
"We made a decision we wanted to stay five more minutes in Florence since we stayed an extra day (due to lack of officials)," said YHC head coach
Matt Stearsman. "What a battle. We stepped up and made our free throws,
Briana Bell made some big shots in overtime.
Ashlyn Ellison and
Sara Jorgensen were tremendous. Eryn made some big shots and big free throws. I thought Ge'Naisha,
Sarah Garner, and
Sarah Reid were great on the glass. We won that game for each other."
An 8-0 Young Harris run in the second quarter gave the Mountain Lions a 35-30 lead with 4:55 remaining on the second of two Cochran three-pointers. Cochran finished with 23 points, one shy of her career high set last month in an OT win over Columbus State University.
YHC, which led 41-36 at the intermission, used an 11-2 run at the start of the third quarter to take a 52-38 lead on an old-fashioned three-point play from Cochran with 6:41 to go. However, the Patriots scored the game's next 13 points over the next three minutes as they got within a point (52-51) after an Abigail Bullock three-pointer.
FMU took its largest lead - four points (73-69) - on a Shaunice Fulmer three-pointer with 2:21 to play in regulation. Young Harris got a Cochran three-pointer and two Jorgensen free throws to give the Mountain Lions a 74-73 lead with 1:00 left.Â
Ellison finished with 18 points and six assists for the Mountain Lions, while Jorgensen tallied 15 points. Garner nearly had another double double as she finished with nine points and nine rebounds. Bell finished with eight points and six rebounds.
Fulmore led the Patriots with 26 points, while Khai Chandler had 23 points and seven rebounds. Bullock added 15 points and six assists, while Kristin Tines grabbed a game-high 16 rebounds.
