ORANGE PARK, Fla. | Valter Andersson and
Anton Karlbom recorded top 10 finishes as the Young Harris College men's golf team opened their spring schedule with a second-place finish at the Spring Kick-off Intercollegiate hosted by Lincoln Memorial University Tuesday (Feb. 13) afternoon.
The Mountain Lions and Lincoln Memorial finished the 54-hole tournament with identical scores of 856; however, the Railsplitters won the tournament on a scorecard playoff as LMU's highest score (75) was better than YHC (79). It's the second time this season the Mountain Lions lost on a scorecard playoff. The other time was the Matt Dyas Invitational back in October.
The 17-team field played on the par 71, 6,633-yard layout at the Fleming Island Golf Club. Young Harris shot rounds of 287 and 279 Monday (Feb. 12) and shot a final round 290 Tuesday (Feb. 13). The 279 scored tied the program's low round in a tournament in the NCAA era, tying the 279 set during the second round of the 2015 Peach Belt Conference Tournament. The 856 score was the third lowest 54-hole tally in the program's history. The Railsplitters had rounds of 284, 285, and 287.
Andersson and Karlbom each tied for ninth place at one-over par 214. Andersson, who notched his fourth career top-10 effort, shot an opening 79, but followed it with two rounds in the 60s. He carded a career-low 66 in the second round and followed it up with a 69 in the final round. Karlbom recorded his first top-10 finish by starting the tournament with a career-best and followed that with a 73 and 71. For both golfers, the 214 score was also their career-best efforts for 54 holes.
David Wallin tied for 26th place at 218 with rounds of 70, 74 and 74, while
John Bolger and
Trey Pearson each tied for 38th at 221. For Bolger, it was a career-best 54 hole score as he registered rounds of 77, 68 and 76. The 68 in the second round was a career best for Bolger. Pearson posted rounds of 70, 72 and 79.
Flagler College's Juan Iturra earned medalist honors with a three-under par 210.
The Mountain Lions return to the links Feb. 26 when they travel to Albany, Georgia, to compete in the Hurricane Invitational hosted by Georgia Southwestern State University.
