PEMBROKE, N.C. | Nyla Allen and Ebone Stevens scored 12 points apiece as the University of North Carolina at Pembroke used a strong second half to defeat Young Harris College 69-50 in a Peach Belt Conference women's basketball contest Saturday (Feb. 10) afternoon at Lumbee Bank Court.
The Braves improved to 8-13 overall and moved into eighth place in the Peach Belt with a 6-11 ledger, while the Mountain Lions fell to 8-16 and 5-12. Young Harris travels down Interstate 95 for a 5:30 p.m. PBC encounter with Francis Marion University Monday (Feb. 12).
Young Harris ended the first quarter on an 11-2 run to open up a 17-8 lead after
Sarah Garner hit two free throws with 37 seconds left.
Briana Bell started the rally with three consecutive three-pointers.Â
The Mountain Lions started the second quarter by
Eryn Cochran and Bell hitting back-to-back three-pointers to give Young Harris a 23-12 lead with 8:00 left before the half. UNC Pembroke ended the quarter on a 14-5 run to tie the game at 34 at halftime.
The Braves started the third quarter as they ended the second. UNC Pembroke used a 10-1 run took take a 44-35 lead on an Allen layup with 7:06 left. YHC got back within five points (46-41) after Bell hit two free throws with 5:01 to play; however, UNCP used a 10-2 run to end the third quarter with a 56-43 lead.
UNC Pembroke increased its lead in the fourth quarter as the Mountain Lions only made two field goals. YHC only scored 16 points in the second half as they went 5-of-32 (15.6 percent) from the field.
Allen recorded a double double as she pulled down 11 rebounds. Aliyah Farmer and Alecia Hardy each grabbed 10 rebounds as the Braves held a 57-37 advantage on the glass.
Bell was the only player to finish in double figures as she scored 16 points and grabbed five rebounds.
Sarah Reid and Cochran finished with eight points, while Garner grabbed 11 rebounds.
