YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | Four Mountain Lions scored in double figures as Young Harris College picks up first conference win over Augusta University 72-59 in a Peach Belt Conference women's basketball game Monday (Dec. 17) afternoon at the YHC Basketball Arena.
The Mountain Lions improved to 3-6 overall and 1-2 in the PBC, while the Jags fell to 1-6 and 0-2. Young Harris returns to action Wednesday (Dec. 19) as they host Flagler College in a 1:30 p.m. PBC contest.
The Mountain Lions welcomed Towns County, Hayesville, and Ranger middle schools as part of the annual Education Day.
Young Harris bolted out of the gates to an 11-1 run in the first 3:36 of the first quarter as
Pamela Diokpara scored five points. Augusta then went on a 16-5 run over the next 5:20 to take a 17-16 lead on a three-pointer by Olivia Swanston.
Grace Isakson tied the game at 20 for the Mountain Lions with a buzzer beater layup to end the first quarter.
After going back-and-forth through the first 6:22 of the second quarter, Young Harris took the lead for good (29-26) with a
Sarah Woghiren three-pointer. The Mountain Lions then took a five-point lead (35-30) into halftime.
Young Harris opened up the second half to a 15-4 run over the course of 5:56 to take a 50-34 lead on an Isakson layup
Diokpara recorded a double-double for the Mountain Lions with 14 points and 11 rebounds.
Sarah Reid recorded a double-double of her own with 10 points and 11 rebounds, while
Avery Jordan tallied 12 points and five rebounds and
Haylie Shope added 11 points and five rebounds.
Young Harris went 20-for-20 at the free throw line, which was one off the conference record for free throw percentage (21-for-21) set by Francis Marion University in 2016. It also tied a school record for free throw shooting set against the University of North Georgia (11-of-11) and Tennessee Wesleyan College (10-of-10) in 2010.
Kiera Howard scored a game-high 16 points for the Jags with two rebounds and four steals. Brianna Middleton recorded a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds.
