The Young Harris College men's golf team battled in the final round of the 2017 NCAA Division II South/Southeast Regional Wednesday (May 10), but just came up short of earning a trip to the national tournament.

The Mountain Lions, who are ranked No. 19 in the latest Bushnell GCAA Coaches poll, shot their best round of the event - a one-over par 289 - on the par 72, 7,407-yard layout at The Shoals Golf Club/Fighting Joe Golf Course to finish in a tie for 11th place with No. 20 Limestone College with a 54-hole score of 887. It was the best-ever finish for Young Harris at the super regional, surpassing last year's 16th-place finish.

The top seven teams at the South/Southeast Regional, along with the top two individuals not on those teams, advanced to the 20-team field at the national championship which will be played May 22-26 on the Watson Course on the Reunion Resort in Kissimmee, Florida. The Mountain Lions, which entered the final day 12 strokes behind the seventh-place team, got within four strokes of making their first-ever national tournament appearance as tournament host No. 9 University of North Alabama finished in seventh with an 883 total.

No. 1 University of West Florida won the 20-team super regional, shooting 278 in the final round to finish at 843, 11 strokes clear of No. 4-ranked Florida Southern College. No 2 Lynn University finished in third place at 859. No. 6 Florida Institute of Technology (872), No. 3 Barry University (875) and No. 12 Newberry College (882) earned the other berths to the national tournament. Seventeen of the 20 teams in the super regional field are ranked nationally in the coaches poll.

Valter Andersson was the top finisher for the Mountain Lions as he carded five birdies en route to a final round 70 to finish in a tie for 22nd place at 218. David Wallin fired his third consecutive round of 73 to finish in a tie for 25th place at 219, while Trey Pearson had his best round of the tournament (72) as he posted four birdies to finish in a tie for 52nd at 224. Eli Crumley, who was playing in his final event as a Mountain Lion, also had his best score of the regional (74) as he tallied four birdies and came in a tie for 78th place at 229, while John Bolger had a 77 and tied for 85th at 232.

Florida Southern's John VanDerLaan earned medalist honors with a 54-hole score of 201 (-15) after registering a seven-under par 65 in the final round.
