YHC moves into first-place tie in Gulf South with 16-11 win over UAH

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. | Young Harris College scored eight of the final nine goals as they rallied for a 16-11 Gulf South Conference women's lacrosse victory over the University of Alabama in Huntsville Sunday (April 9) afternoon at Charger Park.

The Mountain Lions improved to 8-7, while the Chargers fell to 11-4. Both team are now tied atop the GSC standings with 5-1 records entering the final week of the regular season. In addition to the regular-season title, the No. 1 seed also hosts the conference's Invitational Tournament that begins April 21. Young Harris returns to action Wednesday (April 12) when they travel to Cleveland, Tennessee, for a 4 p.m. GSC match against Lee University.

YHC took early leads of 3-0 and 6-2 before UAH closed to within a goal at the half (7-6). The Chargers scored three goals to start the second half and took a 9-7 lead after Nicole Federovitch scored with 20:15 remaining. Young Harris got a goal back on a man-up goal on Maddie Peek's free-position shot with 18:32 to go. UAH added another goal two minutes later to push their lead to 10-8.

The Mountain responded by scoring five unanswered goals - two from Nicole Kernohan, and one each from Rachel Lepine, Kendra Parenteau and Peek- over the next 10 minutes to take a 13-10 lead with 6:08 left. UAH got a goal back, but the Mountain Lions shut down the Charger attack and added three goals - two from Lepine and one from Kernohan - over the final four minutes to preserve the win.

Young Harris outshot UAH 30-27, including a 17-10 margin in the decisive second half. Lepine led the Mountain Lion attack with five scores while Kernohan accounted for four more. Parenteau added three goals, while Peek tallied two. Kaylynn Roach  and Leigh Anne Turner each found the back of the net once.  Erika Cross had one assist for Young Harris.

YHC held a 16-13 advantage in draw controls with Meghan Tonnesen grabbing five. Lepine had three draw controls, while Peek, Kirsten Barth and Parenteau had two apiece. Lepine and Cross each scooped up five ground balls for the Mountain Lions, while Tonnesen had two.
