YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | Young Harris College scored the final 22 goals as the Mountain Lions defeated Shorter University 24-4 in a non-conference men's lacrosse match Saturday (April 8) evening at the YHC Soccer and Lacrosse Field.
The Mountain Lions improved to 6-7, while the Hawks remained winless in 12 attempts. The victory marked the first win in the series (1-4) by Young Harris over the Hawks. Young Harris travels to Mars Hill, North Carolina, for a 7 p.m. match Wednesday (April 12) against Mars Hill University.
Young Harris found themselves in an hold as Shorter took a 3-0 lead 10 minutes into the match. After a YHC timeout, the Mountain Lions scored twice - once by
Jake Dunlop and the other by
Sam Gasta - in a 30-second span to close to 3-2 with 3:47 left in the first quarter. Shorter got its final goal of the match from Nate Malinowski to take a 4-2 lead with 2:12 remaining in the quarter. From that point forward, the Mountain Lions, which outshot Shorter 67-22, held the Hawks without a goal the final 47:12 without a strike.
Chandler Bradley got the Mountain Lions within a goal with two second remaining in the quarter before Young Harris took a 7-4 lead as they started the first five minutes of the second quarter with four goals - including three from
Bruce Silk. The Mountain Lions who scored eight goals in the second quarter took an 11-4 lead at the half. YHC added six goals in the third quarter before the Mountain Lions finished the fourth with seven more.
Silk led the Mountain Lions with five goals, while Bradley pushed across four more.
Bevan Pate, Gasta,
Daniel Zimny, and
Colin Fitzpatrick each found the back of the net twice, while Dunlop,
Zach Stephenson,
Kerry Ostrowski,
Duncan Jackson,
Connor Pittman, and
Sean Siemen added one each. Pate tallied five assists while Gasta and
Matty Ledon two apiece.
Kyle Beverly, Bradley, Dunlop,
Darrien Mask, Silk and Zimny had one assist each.
The Mountain Lions dominated the face-offs, winning 26 of the 31 taken.
Zach Stephenson had 16 face-off wins for YHC, while
Noah Skinner picked up seven more. Young Harris also dominated the ground balls, scooping 50 of them compared to the Hawks' 16. Stephenson led the way with 10 ground balls, while
Julian Infanti and Ostrowski had six each. Ledon, Dunlop and Gasta added four apiece
