YHC clips Hawks 20-14 on Senior Day to earn share of GSC title

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | Young Harris College scored six unanswered goals midway through the second half to rally for a 20-14 Gulf South Conference women's lacrosse victory over Shorter University Saturday (April 15)  afternoon on Senior Day at the YHC Soccer and Lacrosse Field.

With the win, Young Harris improved to 10-7 overall and claims a share of the GSC regular season title with the University of Alabama in Huntsville as both teams finished with 7-1 league marks. The Mountain Lions, who won the GSC regular season and postseason titles last year, earned the No. 1 seed and the right to host next weekend's GSC Invitational Tournament by virtue of a bigger goal differential over UAH in league games (26-25). The Mountain Lions will return to action Friday (April 21) when they host No. 4 seed University of Montevallo in a 4:30 p.m. semifinal match.

After Shorter regained the lead at 12-11, Mary Deatrick tied the game at 12 with 21:34 remaining. Kendra Parenteau gave the Mountain Lions, who outshot Shorter 23-10 in the final 30 minutes, the lead for good 46 seconds later. Young Harris got goals from Rachel Lepine, Nicole Kernohan and two more from Parenteau to open up a 17-12 lead with 13:41 left.

Parenteau scored 10 goals on the day, tying the college record for most goals in a match set by Taylor Lincoln against Reinhardt University during the 2013 season. Kernohan scored four times, while Lepine added two more. Mary Deatrick, Kaylynn Roach and Elli Flaig each scored once. Sarah Bialecki assisted on five goals, while Erika Cross and Lepine had two apiece. Deatrick, Kernohan, Parenteau, Maddie Peek and Meghan Tonnesen had one assist each.

Tonnesen led the way for the Mountain Lions with 11 draw controls, with Cross adding three more. Tonnesen and Lepine each scooped up six ground balls, while Hannah Sacristan corralled five more. Julia Darroch recorded eight saves in goal for Young Harris.
