YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | Young Harris College split a Peach Belt Conference baseball doubleheader with the University of Montevallo Saturday (April 15) afternoon on Senior Day at Zell B. Miller Field.
Montevallo took the opener 14-12 before the Mountain Lions took a 14-4 win in game two.
Young Harris improved to 14-26 overall and 5-16 in the Peach Belt, while the Falcons fell to 24-20 and 9-12. The Mountain Lions return to action Wednesday (April 19) when they travel to Greeneville, Tennessee, for a 2 p.m. doubleheader against Tusculum College.
Young Harris used back-to-back home runs from
Zach Wall,
Rudy Gaona and
Luke Miller in the first inning off Montevallo starter Justin Whitley (4-5) of the nightcap. Wall started the scoring with a two-run homer to right followed by solo shots by Gaona to right field and Miller to center.
Montevallo got a run back in the third before
Brett Westmoreland drove in a run in the bottom half on a single to left. Young Harris broke the game open with five runs in the fifth and four more two innings later to open up a 12-2 advantage.
Cory Ewald drove in two runs in the fifth on a double, while Wall and
Royce Woolfolk contributed RBI singles. Ewald,
Nick Sexton and Miller each drove in runs in the seventh.
Michael Livingston (6-4) earned the win, scattering six hits and striking out six over seven innings.
Young Harris collected 19 hits as every starter had at least one, Woolfolk led the way with five hits. Wall had three, while Odom, Miller, Westmoreland and Ewald had two each.
The Mountain Lions rallied from an 11-2 deficit in the opener to tie the game at 12 with a three-run eighth inning, before Montevallo scored twice in the ninth on Caleb Ledbetter's double.
Colton Nussel (2-4) earned the win in relief, while Wall (0-1) took the loss for the Mountain Lions.
YHC had 15 hits in the opener, including four from Gaona. Sexton had three hits, while Wall, Odom and
Tyler Washington had two apiece. Gaona and Westmoreland had 2 RBI each.
