YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | Luke Miller and
Rudy Gaona combined for seven hits and drove in nine runs as Young Harris College picked up a 16-9 non-conference baseball victory over the University of West Georgia Tuesday (April 11) evening at Zell B. Miller Field.
Both teams are now 13-23. Young Harris returns to action Wednesday (April 12) when they travel to Cleveland, Tennessee, for a 6 p.m. contest against Lee University.
It was an offensive affair for both teams over the first three innings. Young Harris opened up a 12-8 lead after the Mountain Lions scored six runs in the third.
Nick Sexton and
Brett Westmoreland had RBI singles, while Gaona, who went 4-for-6 with 4 RBI, and
Zach Odom had RBI doubles.
Jackson Jones finished off the inning with a two-run homer - his second of the year - to right field.
Miller led off the fifth with his seventh homer of 2017 to give the Mountain Lions a 13-8 lead. Young Harris added three insurance runs in the eighth on a bases-clearing double to right-center field by Miller, who went 3-for-5 with 5 RBI.
Young Harris collected 15 hits, including two hits apiece from Sexton, Westmoreland, and Jones.
Blake Metivier (1-1) earned the win with 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief. He allowed just two hits and one strikeout. Andrew Marshall (1-4) took the loss for the Wolves, giving up seven runs in relief.
