YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | Saint Leo University built up a big lead, but had to hold on for a 15-10 non-conference women's lacrosse victory over Young Harris College Saturday (April 1) afternoon at the YHC Soccer and Lacrosse Field.
The Lions improved to 6-6, while the Mountain Lions fell to 6-7. Young Harris steps back into Gulf South Conference competition next Saturday (April 8) with a 1 p.m. Central time match against the University of Montevallo in Montevallo, Alabama.
Saint Leo built up a 10-2 advantage at halftime and led by as many as 11 goals after Leslie Ferguson scored with 22:25 remaining to open up a 13-2 lead. Young Harris reeled off the next four goals - two by
Kendra Parenteau and one each by
Kaylynn Roach and
Sarah Bialecki - to cut the deficit to 13-6 with 15:12 to go. After a Lion goal, the Mountain Lions got a strike from
Mary Deatrick and Parenteau deposited two more goals to trim the margin to 14-9 with 6:41 remaining, but that would be as close as Young Harris would get.
Parenteau led YHC with five goals, while
Rachel Lepine added two more. Bialecki, Deatrick and Roach accounted for the other Mountain Lion scores.
Erika Cross registered two assists. Lepine coralled six draw controls for Young Harris, while
Meghan Tonnesen had three. Lepine scooped up four ground balls, while
Hannah Sacristan,
Kirsten Barth,
Jordan Cox and Deatrick had two apiece.
Julia Darroch had nine saves in goal for the Mountain Lions.
