PHILLIPI, W.Va. | Young Harris College scored twice  in the final 20 seconds, including the game-winning score with 1.7 seconds to rally for an 18-17 victory over Alderson Broaddus University Tuesday (March 7) afternoon.
The Mountain Lions improved to 3-5, while the Battlers fell to 0-2. Young Harris travels to Elkins, West Virginia, Wednesday (March 8) for a 1 p.m. encounter against Davis & Elkins College.
Young Harris found themselves in an early hole as Alderson Broaddus jumped out to a 7-2 lead after the first quarter. The Battlers, who held a 10-6 advantage at the half. led 17-14 with 10:46 remaining in the fourth quarter after Branden Hunt scored.  The Mountain Lions got scores from
Connor Pittman and
Matty Ledon - both assisted by
Bruce Silk - 90 seconds apart to get within 17-16 with 6:07 remaining.Â
Alderson Broaddus had a chance to add an insurance goal with 90 seconds remaining as they enjoyed a two-man advantage; however, the Battlers decided to kill the time and eventually turned the ball over to the Mountain Lions, who then got an unassisted goal from
Colin Fitzpatrick to knot the score at 17 with 20 seconds left.
Zach Stephenson, who won 18 face-offs, claimed the face-off for the Mountain Lions leading to
Duncan Jackson's game-winning goal with 1.7 seconds left. Jackson's deciding goal was set up by Silk, who led YHC with four assists.
Silk and
Sam Gasta led the Mountain Lions with four goals apiece, while Bevin Pate, Fitzpatrick and Jackson each put two goals in the back of the net. Ledon, Pittman,
Daniel Zimny and
Chandler Bradley each accounted for a YHC goal. Pate added two assists, while Gasta and
Julian Infanti had one apiece.Â
Stephenson led the Mountain Lion defense with 13 ground balls, while
Zac Barrett scooped up four more. Silk,
Kerry Ostrowski,
Darrien Mask and
Tyler Buehler had three ground balls each. Goalie
Sean Dever got the win in relief for the Mountain Lions as he stopped 12 shots.
